What does “qualified” mean in metal additive manufacturing?
In metal AM purchasing, one word is routinely used for several different claims: qualified. "This machine is qualified for titanium" and "this bracket is qualified for flight" are not the same sentence, and confusing them is among the most expensive vocabulary errors in a capital decision. This page draws the distinctions — as a conceptual map, not a certification ladder.
A conceptual progression — six levels of "we can trust this"
1 — Machine / process compatibility. The platform is capable of the process family. This is a physics statement, and brochures sell it as if it were an engineering dossier.
2 — OEM-listed material. The vendor lists an alloy as supported. "Titanium supported" does not identify the exact alloy, the parameter set, the density, the tensile or fatigue behavior, the heat-treatment condition, the orientation effects, or the repeatability — each of those is a separate claim.
3 — Parameter set / process window. A defined recipe with a window the vendor can describe and defend. Ask which parameter set the material claim actually refers to.
4 — Material-property evidence. Test-bar data, in stated conditions and orientations, tied to a stated process. Property evidence is what separates a supported material from a characterized one.
5 — Controlled, internally validated process. Someone — the OEM, a bureau, or you — has run this process repeatably, with monitoring and control, long enough that variation is understood rather than hoped for.
6 — Part / application qualification. Your part, with your acceptance evidence, meets your customer’s or regulator’s requirements. No brochure has ever reached this level on its own; it is reached by running your geometry and measuring the result.
Why the terminology varies
Aerospace, medical, defense, tooling and job-shop buyers all use the word with different referents, because their governing documents — contract clauses, standards, regulatory files — differ. Published standards describe vocabulary and frameworks for qualification, not automatic approval; the standards translator explains what the common ones actually do. If two people in your meeting use "qualified" differently, surface it at minute one, not at first-article inspection.
The buyer move
At every level of the ladder, the request is the same: evidence, at the level you need, for the alloy and geometry you actually buy. "Titanium supported" is a conversation opener. A documented parameter set with property evidence, and a demonstrated route to your part, is the close — and the exact thing the verification checklist turns your shortlist into.
