What equipment do you need besides the metal 3D printer?
Buying the printer may not mean you have a production cell. Between a completed build and a finished part, most metal AM processes need handling, thermal, finishing or inspection steps — and some of the machines that do that work are not sold in the same quote. What applies depends on your process, part and volume. Verify every item with the OEM.
LPBF — what may surround the printer
A laser powder bed machine arrives buried in powder and leaves a composite plate. The stations it may need: powder storage and handling, sieving, depowdering, spare build plates, inert-gas infrastructure, extraction and filtration, support removal, heat treatment, and finishing. Which of these you must buy — versus outsource to a job shop — is one of the first real budget questions.

Powder is an inventory item with handling, labeling and reuse decisions attached.
Sieving and depowdering
Frequently separate purchases from the printer; may be shared across machines.
Inert-gas infrastructure
Cylinders, bulk supply or generation — a recurring operating decision, not a one-time buy.
Support removal and finishing
Machining, blasting or finishing may already exist in your shop — confirm capacity, not just capability.
Binder jetting and bound-metal extrusion — the furnace is part of the machine
These processes print a fragile, binder-filled part; furnace debinding and sintering turn it into metal. The sintering furnace — capacity, atmosphere, schedule — can be the real bottleneck and the larger hidden capital line. Ask whether sintering is in the OEM quote, a shared furnace’s spare capacity, or an outsourced service.
DED and WAAM — deposition is only the beginning of the part
Wire and powder DED and WAAM deposit near-net shapes that usually need machining to tolerance. The realistic cell includes fixturing, positioning (robot or gantry), shielding, machining capacity and inspection. Budget the machining hours, because the as-deposited surface is a starting point, not a finished face.
Cold spray — gas is the engine
Cold spray accelerates powder with compressed gas at high temperature and pressure. Process and carrier gas supply and management, nozzle peripherals, substrate preparation and finishing/machining carry the real operating cost — the spray gun alone produces nothing.
The buyer move
For every category above, one of three answers is fine — included, optional, or "we do not need that for our workflow" — but unknown is expensive. Turn the unknowns into written OEM questions before you treat a quote as comparable to another.
