What does your facility need for a metal 3D printer?

The most expensive surprise in metal AM installation is discovering the printer fits through the door but the operation does not fit in the building. This page lists the categories to investigate — at the level a buyer needs to ask good questions. It deliberately does not engineer your facility: that work belongs to your OEM and your local professionals.

Actual installation, fire, electrical, ventilation, gas, occupational-safety and environmental requirements depend on the machine, materials, facility and applicable authorities. Verify requirements with the OEM and qualified local professionals before installation.

The categories to investigate

Electrical service — capacity, phase, quality, distance to the panel
Process or inert gas — cylinders, bulk or generation, and where cylinders live
Compressed air where the process or ancillary equipment needs it
Extraction and ventilation — powder handling and post-processing stations
HVAC and environment — humidity control for powder, stable conditions for optics
Floor loading — the machine plus foundation, furnace and fixtures
Delivery and access — truck, dock, door, aisle and the final path
Rigging — who moves it, how, and what breaks first
Service clearances — technicians need sides and top, not just a footprint
Feedstock storage — receiving, staging, reuse handling, waste handling
Post-processing space — furnace, saw, blasting, machining — often larger than the printer
Workflow separation — powder, finished parts and people do not enjoy sharing one room

Powder changes the conversation

Powder-based processes (LPBF, binder jet) put a flowable, combustible-looking fine material inside your building. That does not automatically make your shop a hazardous-classified facility — it makes one question unavoidable: what does the OEM document for this specific machine and alloy, and what do your local fire and safety authorities require? Storage, handling, cleanup and waste each have decisions attached. The OEM’s documentation is the starting point; your local authorities, with your alloy list in hand, are the final word.

A cheap sequence

Before you commit capital: (1) get the OEM’s site-preparation sheet in writing, (2) walk the physical route a pallet takes to the machine’s final position, (3) price the ancillary stations from the ancillary guide against your existing shop, (4) hand the site sheet to a local electrician and your insurer’s risk engineer and ask "what is missing?" A two-hour walkthrough routinely surfaces five-figure gaps — and it is free.
