Metal 3D printing post-processing: what happens after the build?
When the lid goes up, most metal AM processes have produced a raw condition, not a product. The route from build plate to accepted part decides your lead time, your labor plan and a large share of part cost — Wohlers Report 2026 measured post-processing at 24% of a metal part’s cost. This guide walks the stations a part may pass through. It is a map of options, not a mandatory sequence.
The stations, in order of the typical route
Cooling and depowdering come first for powder-based processes: loose powder comes out, is sieved, and may be reused under your own qualification rules. Removing the part from the plate and stripping supports is physical work — saw, EDM or manual — and scales with geometry, not with how modern the machine looks. Thermal steps such as stress relief, solution or aging treatment, and HIP (hot isostatic pressing) may be specified by the alloy, the customer or your own qualification plan — none of them is automatically required for every part, and the question "does this part need heat treatment?" belongs in the workflow design, not discovered after the build.
Machining may remain because functional surfaces — bores, threads, mating faces — need tolerance or finish a layer process does not reach as-built. Surface finishing (blasting, polishing, bead blast, coating) may follow. Then inspection: dimensional verification, and NDT where the application requires it. Only then is it an accepted part.
What changes by process family
LPBF parts arrive sintered-in-powder on a plate with supports; the thermal/support/machining route depends on alloy and application. Binder jet and bound-metal extrusion parts must be debound and sintered before they are metal at all — furnace capacity is a production constraint. DED and WAAM parts are usually near-net shapes whose post-processing is dominated by machining to final geometry. Cold spray deposits may need machining or finishing to function. Why this matters to a buyer
Post-processing is where an "automated" process becomes a labor plan. Each station is a decision: buy equipment, route work to a shop you already have, or outsource to a specialist. Those decisions set lead time (days of furnace queue can dwarf hours of printing), capacity ceilings, dimensional achievable results, and the recurring cost line the machine quote never showed you. If you can only change one input in your business case, model the downstream route honestly.
